Why I Believe The New Testament Is Historically Reliable

Many Christians talk about Christian apologetics. Indeed, the topic is very interesting for Christians on many levels as we seek to gain confidence and assurance for our own faith. And, of course, apologetics also has great value for us as we seek to help seekers and doubters to get over the intellectual barriers keeping them from embracing faith in Christ.

However, since the earliest of these mss. date from the ninth century the OT text that can be dated between B.C. Cave four (4Q), e.g.

It is great to be here with you all at this important conference, where we hope to learn together how to be more effective evangelists. My task tonight is to help us all to see more clearly the role of persuasion in the work of evangelism. Can I start by saying a little bit about myself? I became a Christian 50 years ago at the age of My parents were not Christians, but I met Christians during my teens — and they impressed me. They were kind and practised hospitality.

They always made me feel welcome and included me in their activities. The more I heard, the more I was intrigued. So at the age of 17, I decided that I needed to evaluate Christianity for myself. I bought a modern English version of the New Testament and set out to read just one chapter every night, before putting my light out. It takes nine months to read it like that, and I expected then to be able to make up my mind about Christ, one way or the other. Instead, I finished it full of questions, but different questions from the ones I started with.

So having got a measure of it, I started to read it all again, and then a third time, to focus specifically on the issues and the centrality of the resurrection. So after three years of personal and private enquiry, I became satisfied that Jesus was whom he claimed to be, that God had raised him from the dead and I would have to face him in eternity.

If they were written by the disciples, then their reliability, authenticity, and accuracy are better substantiated. Also, if they were written early, this would mean that there would not have been enough time for myth to creep into the gospel accounts since it was the eyewitnesses to Christ’s life that wrote them.

Furthermore, those who were alive at the time of the events could have countered the gospel accounts; and since we have no contradictory writings to the gospels, their early authorship as well as apostolic authorship becomes even more critical. None of the gospels mention the destruction of the Jewish temple in A.

The credibility of Scripture is certainly a multifaceted issue. In this chapter, I will examine one specific angle-whether the New Testament is a historically reliable document. Topics such as precise textual issues, genre considerations, specific critical methodologies, scientific concerns, and the doctrine of inspiration are beyond the focus here. I will begin by assessing some conventional areas of consideration.

Typically, defenses of the reliability of the New Testament have emphasized several items: the superior manuscript numbers, early dating of these copies, as well as the authoritative authorship and dating of the original compositions. I will respond briefly to each, since they all still have an important part to play.

The first in a new series entitled The Holman Apologetics Commentary on the to defend the reliability of Scripture and the historical evangelical understanding of The Four Gospels and the book of Acts tell the story of Jesus’ life and the birth date of composition, available manuscripts, potential contradictions and texts.

In the 2nd century, several Christian writers—Aristides, Justin Martyr , Tatian , Theophilus, Athenagoras , Tertullian—defended Christianity against the popular and political charges brought against it by non-Christians. The Apologists also responded both to the Jews who claimed the Old Testament scriptures as their own and rejected the Christian interpretation of them as fulfilled in Jesus Christ and to the more philosophical criticisms addressed to the doctrine of the Incarnation.

Celsus was quite well informed about the Christian scriptures and doctrines, although he associated with them some gnostic beliefs that were disowned by the churches. He conducted his critique from the moving platform of his own eclectic Middle Platonism along with some Jewish objections to the story of Jesus. Celsus ridiculed the Christian worship of a man of recent appearance who had died a disgraceful death.

In order to refute the tolerant and politically convenient polytheism of Celsus, which harmonized the notion of a supreme but distant Deity known under many names with belief in numerous subordinate local deities, Origen drew on arguments that had already been developed in Hellenistic Judaism in favour of monotheism. But Origen needed to defend specific doctrines concerning Christ. Augustine showed the inconsistency of the critics in failing to blame the civic gods for previous setbacks and in failing to give credit for the divine benefits bestowed on Christian emperors.

He asserted that the true God is the ruler of all nations, bestowing both success and calamity for his own purposes. Augustine developed an entire philosophy of history , which helped shape for a thousand years the Christian understanding of church and state. The institutions of the earthly city are not without their divine rationale, for they ensure a relative justice amid the fallen condition of humankind.

Yet the happiness the earthly city allows is only temporary, and its society is conflicted.

Are these stories true history or just religious fiction? Christians accept the stories as true and say that the entire Bible is a reliable communication inspired by God. In this volume, four world-class New Testament scholars address challenges to the reliability of the Gospels and Acts. In order to identify the most important challenges, the authors drew from the literature of skeptics and New Testament critics, plus they included questions that many Christians ask as well.

The result is the most comprehensive defense of the Gospels and Acts that has ever been published. The primary purpose of the Holman Apologetics Commentary on the Bible is to equip readers to defend the reliability of Scripture and the historic evangelical understanding of its teachings. It is designed for use by general readers, though scholars will find it a probing and welcome resource as well.

A secondary purpose is to encourage awareness and discussion of Bible difficulties that are not commonly mentioned from the pulpit or even the seminary lectern. This is not a verse-by-verse commentary.
