If they don’t, pushiness can turn into intimidation and pursuit into stalking; then it’s time to call the police. His screen presence, however, takes some getting used to.
My Date with Drew (United States, 2003)
There are Dreamers and there are Believers Since the second grade, Brian has had a crush on Drew Barrymore and now 20 years later he wants to fulfill his dream by asking her on a date. Clever and often funny, My Date with Drew is a kind of slapdash excuse for a documentary feature, albeit one with a few surprises. Enlisting a few eager and bemused producers and directors as allies, Herzlinger goes through a self-improvement campaign–exercising, finding out what Barrymore likes–while also interviewing people who know her, including actor Eric Roberts and Charlie’s Angels co-screenwriter John August.
The tricky part, of course, is not giving anyone the impression that Herzlinger is just a sophisticated stalker, especially when he’s busy wrangling invitations to celebrity parties so he can get near the object of his lifelong crush. The film runs a little low on steam in its second half, and the suggestion that the movie is really about the beautiful pursuit of a worthwhile dream, and not just a first-feature gimmick, gets a little precious.

What starts off as a self-serving promotional exercise takes on almost unreasonably charming dimensions in “My Date With Drew. By Justin Chang. The prophetic winning answer?
Brian Herzlinger, My Date With Drew a place on the bottom shelf of reality TV, My Date With Drew is an act of petty self-promotional chutzpah.
The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures. This article was published more than 10 years ago. Some information in it may no longer be current. It is also an offbeat how-to guide for indie filmmaking wannabes that hinges on the premise of the web phenom of a few years back, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon , in which players try to relate someone, anyone, to the actor by six or fewer degrees of separation eerily, it almost always works.
Drew Barrymore is the famously adorable and frustratingly elusive Bacon substitute. But this is no game. My Date with Drew. Interview: Brian Herzlinger. IGN talks to a man who followed his dream to date Drew Barrymore. The quote is by Drew Barrymore, and its meaning is a running theme throughout the course of this pseudo-documentary, pseudo-romantic comedy from co-directors Brian Herzlinger , Joe Gunn and Bret Winn.
Documentary following Brian Herzlinger, an unemployed year-old aspiring filmmaker from New Jersey, who has had a crush on film star Drew Barrymore.
Brian Herzlinger might be the lamest documentary filmmaker of all time. I am the kind of person who will watch a documentary about virtually anything, and I tend to like them all; it’s my favorite art form. But Herzlinger’s My Date with Drew, out this month, is really pushing it. He decided the best way to use this money was to buy a camcorder at Circuit City, spend a month trying to get a date with Drew Barrymore, film all of his bad decisions, and then return the camcorder before Circuit City’s thirty-day return policy expired.
In other words, Brian Herzlinger is a stalker and an opportunist. The narrative is mostly composed of the director contacting everyone he knows in Los Angeles and asking if they know how to get in touch with Drew. Herzlinger’s most interesting moves are auditioning women who resemble Barrymore so that he can go on a practice date and interviewing Corey Feldman who swears that Drew was his girlfriend during the filming of The Goonies.
Weirdly or perhaps predictably , the scheme works: When Barrymore realizes Herz-linger’s cinematic obsession could also serve as a publicity vehicle, she agrees to have dinner with him in New York. Drew shows up in her boyfriend’s T-shirt and spouts a lot of new-age nonsense. In theory, this is supposed to give hope to all mediocre men who aspire to love women out of their league.
In practice, My Date with Drew proves that if you’re stupid enough to fantasize about meeting a celebrity, you’re probably stupid enough to succeed. United States. Type keyword s to search.
